Hi Everyone,
We have been very lucky to obtain the rights to publicly screen a documentary called 'The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia'. This 52 minute documentary examines what it is to be dyslexic, amongst a series of short interviews with successful adults with dyslexia and teens in the process of developing strategies to make learning achievable.
As the flyer points out (attached) up to 1 in 5 children have some form of Dyslexia. Up until 2008 the Ministry of Education in New Zealand refused to accept that Dyslexia existed and it is still something we as teachers know very little about. If your child struggles with reading and writing and you don't know why, then this doco is a must see.
We are having two screenings on Tuesday 3rd December; 4pm and 7pm. Entry is free, but could you please phone the office
(3028500) to book your seat so we know how many people are coming. Feel free to bring your children.
See you there,
Chris

Planting Rata Trees
Today we planted some Rata trees at school, the other name for Rata is Southern Pohutakawa. We had to measure out where we were going to plant them. There had to be 5 metres between each tree, as they grow quite large. We then had to dig out the hole (well Mr Cooke did that for us, as the ground was quite hard). Once the hole was dug we added some mulch/compost (from our worm farms), more soil and then planted the tree. We pushed the soil tightly around the base of the tree. We then placed a protective shield around our tree (Possums like Rata trees) and some stones.
We put the sprinkler on the tree, to allow it to have moist soil, and to encourage it to grow.
We will add some photos at a later date. Next time you are down at school, go and have a look at them. Hopefully if all goes well, these trees will grow over the years!!

Healthy Meal Homework
I hope this works, I am going to try to post some of the keynotes and power-points that some of the children did. The posters are displayed in our classroom. Feel free to come and have a look.

Term 4
Wow, can you believe it, we only have one term left!!! I hope you have all had a fantastic holiday with your family and friends. Remember to bring in something to share from your break with the rest of the class.
I managed to get away over to Aussie to catch up with a friend that I haven't seen for a while. I took photos on my phone, just have to work out how to send them to my email now (haven't had much luck yet) then I will post some.
We have a very busy term starting off with Athletics in Week 2 (will have to do another clean up with the wind the other night, another tree came down) We will also be finishing off our topic learning from last term before moving onto another area. We also have Life Education and Wasterbusters near the end of the term, and weather permitting hopefully we will get in some swimming at a later date.
I will post my newsletter on here, along with calendar of events so you can refer back to. Homework is going to be a little different this term. Your child will come home with a notice today with information about it.
That is probably as clear as mud, if you have any questions, please contact me.
Looking forward to working with the Barrhill children and you for another term.

Weather Topic
As part of our Weather unit we have been researching and learning about Weather Vanes.
We have worked in a group, discussing what materials would be the best to use and designing a weather vane for MPS.
We had to draw our plan and then use a flow diagram to explain the steps we would take to make it.
We are hoping to make these next term to put around our school.
Here are some photos of us working together.

Barrhill & Coleridge's Fun Day
Due to all the hard work that we have done over the last term Miss Walker and Miss Ish decided that we could have a fun day in Coleridge, along with a shared lunch. We brainstormed all the ideas on what our day would look like and then voted on the activity that we wanted to do most.
The three top ideas were
1. Wacky hair and PJ Day
2. Baking
3. Movie & Popcorn
In the morning we made some chocolate and 100s and 1000s marshmellow sticks and mint truffles. These were yummy. Then we did some art and we watched a movie - Robots. We also played a game outside in the afternoon.
Our shared lunch was amazing, we had LOTS and LOTS of food. Miss Ish and Miss Walker didn't think we would eat it all, but guess what, WE DID!!
We had a great day!! Here are some photos of us in our PJs and wacky hair.

Monster Symmetry
Wow I feel like I have spent a lot of time today putting on photos of all that we have been doing. We have been very busy Barrhill.
Below are the photos of our Monster Symmetry. We had to paint our names on one side of a page, fold it in half and push down hard. When we opened it up, our name was on both sides.
We then made our names into monsters. Come and have a look in Miss Ish's office to have a close look.

Wind Storm
The wind storm came at quite an appropriate time with our learning in Barrhill (even though I wasn't that keen on it). We had lots of conversations about weather, what caused it and the damage that it did for our families and school (big tree falling down). Did anyone see us on TV One News on Wednesday??
We went for a quick walk around Methven on Wednesday, looking at the damage that had occurred. When we got back to class, we used the Black (Negative), Yellow (positive) and Red (Feelings) hats to discuss the storm. Lots of ideas came out for each of these.
Below are some photos we took of the damage occurred around town and school.

Cricket Session
This week on Wednesday we had a cricket session with Dan. We learnt how to hold a bat and hit the ball hard.
We played two games, one was to run and try to grab a ball first. The second was to have three turns each in teams at hitting the ball and getting either 1, 2 or 4 runs (depending how far the ball went). We had to add our scores together as a team to see which team won.
Below are some photos and videos of our session. We had lots of fun!!!

Ski Photos
Thank you to Mrs Watson for the following photos of our ski trips. If anyone else has any please send them in so I can put up for all to enjoy.
We had two great days up Mt Hutt and it was great seeing how far the children have come.
Thank you to all the parent helps, without you it would not be possible.
