Methven Area Swimming Sports

Methven Area Swimming Sports.

On Tuesday 26th February 2013 Barrhill were full of excitment because we were having our swimming sports.  We all participated in either a width or length of Freestyle or backstroke.  As we walked over we looked at the pool and wondered how warm is it?  We lined up and sat in our event numbers waiting for the teachers to call out our number.  Some of us were nervous and had butterflies in our tummies.  We all tried our hardest and were very proud of ourselves.

Here are some photos of us at our swimming sports - have fun trying to work out whos who.

MPS Triathlon

Well done to all the Barrhill children who participated in the MPS Triathlon on Friday.  You all did an amazing job and should be very proud of yourselves!! I look forward to seeing you all having another go next year.  Thanks Mrs Hooker for your wonderful organisation!!

Here are some photos from the day.

Treaty of Waitangi Day

On Friday 8th of Feb Barrhill, Coleridge, Double and Mt Hutt Rooms had a day of learning about the Treaty of Waitangi.  We started off our learning walking around a huge map of NZ on our fields.

We looked at the major cities around NZ and where the Treaty was signed.  We were put into groups Maori or British and we acted out the signing of the treaty.  We then talked about our MPS treeline and what rules we needed to make it fair and safe for all.  We then made up a treaty for the treeline for all classes to sign and use.

Here are some facts we found out during our day of learning:

Did you know:

  • The Treaty was the first New Zealand founding document.
  • In the 1830s there were around 100,000 Maori and 200 Pakeha who were mainly whalers living in New Zealand.
  • In 1835 James Busby drew up the treaty.
  • In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by 500 Maori chiefs.
  • There were two versions of treaty, one was in Maori the other English.  These were not in direct translation with each other.
  • There were 9 copies made of the treaty.  These copies were then sent around New Zealand for the Maori chiefs to sign.  Only one of the copies was written in English.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to 2013.

We have enjoyed our first week together, getting to know each other and discovering our new classroom.   We are still waiting for our BIG whiteboard to be put up - will need man muscles to do this as it is rather large!!

This year I am trying out having a blog, please bear with me as I learn how to work it!!  I am hoping that I will have the time to keep this up to date and help to show you what is happening in Barrhill Room.

On Friday we had a fantastic day learning about the Treaty of Waitangi and where it was signed around New Zealand. We have a display in the library that you could come and view to see what we did.
