Hi Everyone,
We have been very lucky to obtain the rights to publicly screen a documentary called 'The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia'. This 52 minute documentary examines what it is to be dyslexic, amongst a series of short interviews with successful adults with dyslexia and teens in the process of developing strategies to make learning achievable.
As the flyer points out (attached) up to 1 in 5 children have some form of Dyslexia. Up until 2008 the Ministry of Education in New Zealand refused to accept that Dyslexia existed and it is still something we as teachers know very little about. If your child struggles with reading and writing and you don't know why, then this doco is a must see.
We are having two screenings on Tuesday 3rd December; 4pm and 7pm. Entry is free, but could you please phone the office
(3028500) to book your seat so we know how many people are coming. Feel free to bring your children.
See you there,
Chris

Planting Rata Trees
Today we planted some Rata trees at school, the other name for Rata is Southern Pohutakawa. We had to measure out where we were going to plant them. There had to be 5 metres between each tree, as they grow quite large. We then had to dig out the hole (well Mr Cooke did that for us, as the ground was quite hard). Once the hole was dug we added some mulch/compost (from our worm farms), more soil and then planted the tree. We pushed the soil tightly around the base of the tree. We then placed a protective shield around our tree (Possums like Rata trees) and some stones.
We put the sprinkler on the tree, to allow it to have moist soil, and to encourage it to grow.
We will add some photos at a later date. Next time you are down at school, go and have a look at them. Hopefully if all goes well, these trees will grow over the years!!

I hope this works, I am going to try to post some of the keynotes and power-points that some of the children did. The posters are displayed in our classroom. Feel free to come and have a look.
