Today the Triangles were looking at the strategy of Subtracting ones and tens.
We learnt that we can only use this strategy if the digit in the ones column in the first number is bigger than the digit in the ones column of the second number.
First we subtract the ones column, then we subtract the tens column.
We then add our answers together to solve the equation.
46 - 31 = ?
6-1 = 5
40 - 30 = 10
5 + 10 = 15
So 46 - 31 = 15
We watched the following video on how to do this strategy and then had a go at solving some examples.
We have written some equations for you to have a go at, see if you can solve it using this strategy.
1. Gus had 83 raccoons and he sold 77 of them. How many has he got left?
2. Juliet had 46 sweets and she gave 36 to Kimberley. How many sweets does she now have?
3. Jessica had 48 horses and sold 37. How many horses does she have now?
4. Holly had caught 26 butterflies and gave her friend Ruby 10 of them. How many does she have left?
5. Fergus had 20 cookies, he ate 10. How many cookies does he have left?
6. Mitch had 64 trains. A truck took 31 of them away. How many are left?
7. Jack had 86 lollies, he sold 38. How many does he have left.
8. Kimberley had 46 kittens and gave Samantha 21 of them. How many does she have left?
9. Sam had 89 snakes and he sold 56 of them. How many snakes does he have now?
Have a go at solving the answers, showing your working out. Have fun!
